Hi.  I was wondering if anyone knows where in the world spermatid ICSI might be available.  It still does not seem to be allowed in the UK due to the ghastly HFEA.  Also does anyone know if trials in it are being done that could be entered.

Thanks for any info.

Spermatid/Icsi is not carried out in the UK as this condition is very complexed. There are very few published research documents that we have been able to access however we will post these asap.

Here is some data on Spermatid, however we feel it should be viewed with care:

ADVANCES IN MICROINSEMINATION WITH SPERMATID

Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics, Nanjing General Hospital, Nanjing, China.

Men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) can now be treated by using Intra-Oocyte Round Spermatid Injection (ROSI or elogated spermatid injection (ELSI). Spermatids can be retrieved from the semen or from testis biopsy specimens. But the rates of fertilisation and pregnancy with spermatids have been disapointing. Many problems limiting success rate and hindering a wide application of this technique still remain unsolved, including the incomplete maturation of spermatid nuclear, oocyte activation and identification of a live spermatid.

Thank you for this information.  It is clearly not going to be easy to get this done.  Especially as the UK authorities aren't allowing this.

More on this subject - however please treat this with an open mind.

A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY OUTCOME USING TESTICULAR SPERM FROM AN INFERTILE MALE PRETREATED WITH HCG.

Cao YX Zhang ZG.

Reproduction centre, department of Obstetrics, The First Affiliated Hospital, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China zz_100@163.com

A very rare case successful pregnancy was reported using testicular sperm from severely infertile man given treatment of hCG in advance. Prior to treatment, no sperm were present in the ejaculate and testicle.hCG was administered to the patient for spermatogenesis. After a period of hCG, a few immature sperm were observed in the minced testicular specimen. A successful pregnency was established by using the sperm. Treatment y administration od hCG to generate sperm followed by ICSI for the azoospermia patient was effective and practcable.

Having researched Spermatid further - it appears it is banned throughout Europe, hence not availabe.

As new data comes through we will try and keep you all updated.
